The Forth Orthodontist/Oral Maxillofacial Surgeon I Consulted (Malaysia)

My uncle and auntie referred me to their orthodontist in Malaysia. My uncle’s son has a similar condition while my auntie and her daughter also have the same jaw defects. There are at least 8 people in my family that have this problem and it seems to occur randomly.

I won’t reveal the Malaysian doctor’s name but he seems like a very experienced guy. He has his own clinic in Kuala Lumpur but he goes to Klang at least once a week. If you would like to know his name, just drop me an email.

The first time I consulted him was with my cousin in Klang some time in March 2010, who was getting her braces tweaked. He only needed one look at me without the help of X-rays or teeth models to tell me what was wrong with my jaws. I was instantly impressed because other doctors needed … Read more…

Indirect Speech From My Third Orthodontist (Thailand)

In 2008, I decided I wanted to leave Singapore to get away from it all for at least a year. I decided I would move to Bangkok, Thailand for a year or so.

Therefore, in December 2008, I flew over to Bangkok to find an apartment to rent and returned to Singapore in the middle of January 2009. I settled some personal matters and got rid of most of the things I no longer needed. I then flew back to Bangkok with my 4 cats on the plane! I had a friend who helped with the cats and it was pretty dramatic when I touched down in Bangkok because I was asked to pay the custom officers a bribe!

Apart from the initial culture shock of dealing with dishonesty and corruption in Thailand, I soon got used to life in Thailand. I started my search for an orthodontist and maxillofacial … Read more…

Misleading Information From The Second Orthodontist I Consulted (Singapore)

The second orthodontist I consulted in 2006 was referred to me by my sister. The orthodontist was also an experienced oral & maxillofacial surgeon. He did not work for a government hospital and was considered a private surgeon. I received a discount for my consultation and x-rays but I will never forget the misleading information he told me, which put me off jaw surgery in Singapore.

Creating a Negative Impression of Singapore Government Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons

This doctor told me that getting jaw surgery from a government oral & maxillofacial surgeon has greater risk because it will be conducted by 1 senior surgeon and 1 or more junior surgeons. It didn’t sound like a big deal to me but my sister told me something like, “It is your face, it is better to be safe than sorry!”

I was willing to take that risk of getting my jaw surgery … Read more…

The First Orthodontist I Consulted (Singapore)

I consulted a total of 5 orthodontists (3 from Singapore, 1 from Malaysia and another from Thailand) and received treatment from 2 of them during this long process of correcting my jaw deformities. This blog post is about the first orthodontist I consulted about my jaws.

Knowing what I now know, I truly believe some orthodontists are idiots. They know very little about the costs of getting jaw surgery and some of them know very little about preparing your teeth for jaw surgery. I learnt this the hard way.

I think I first consulted an orthodontist in 2006 about the possibility of getting jaw surgery. My friend recommended his orthodontist to me and I decided to listen to what he had to say about my condition.

I remember he took about 5 minutes to check out my teeth. He poked around my mouth and checked out my front, left and … Read more…
